Getting there is half the fun!
TRAVEL OPTIONS
Montalcino is a small town in the Tuscany Region of North Central Italy. There are multiple different European cities to arrive in but the airfare varies greatly when traveling from the USA. Airfare once in Europe is cheaper and the high speed trains are another convienient and economical option after completing the international flight.

Italian Airports
There are several airports in Italy which can be used to reach Montalcino as your final destination

Rome: Vinci - Fiumicino (FCO)
International airport, located in in Fiumicino, Italy, serving Rome. It is one of the busiest in the country, the 9th busiest airport in Europe and the world's 46th-busiest airport.
You will then need to drive approximately 2 hours and 45 min (145.40 miles/234.8 km) from Rome to Montalcino or take the high speed train from Rome to Florence, pick up a rental car in Florence and then drive approximately 1 hour 29 min (66 miles/105.4 km) to Montalcino.

Florence: Amerigo Vespucci Airport (FLR)
International airport of Florence, the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany.
You will then need transportation approximately 1 hour and 33 min (74 miles/119 km) by car to Montalcino.

Milan: Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)
Milan Malpensa is the largest airport in northern Italy. It is located 30 miles/50 km to the northwest of Milan and is further away from Montalcino than most of the other other airports listed here.
After arriving in Milan, you would still need to drive 5 hours and 1 min (280 miles/449 km) by car from Milan to Montalcino. Alternatively taking the high speed train from Milan to Florence, then picking up a rental car in Florence before driving approximately 1 hour and 33 min (74 miles/119 km) to Montalcino would also be possible.

Venice: Venezia Airport (VCE)
You will then need transportation approximately 3.75 hours (225 miles/360 km) by car to Montalcino.
Alternatively taking the high speed train from Venice to Florence, then picking up a rental car in Florence before driving approximately 1.75 hours (70 miles/110 km) to Montalcino would also be possible. Unfortunately, this route from the airport would be complicated and this destination would not be ideal unless staying in Venice before the wedding event and traveling to Montalcino on a different date.

Pisa: Pisa International Airpot (PSA)
Pisa International Airport is also named Galileo Galilei Airport. It is one of the two major airports in Tuscany, the other being Florence Airport. It is named after Galileo Galilei, the scientist and native of Pisa.
You will then need transportation approximately 2.25 hours (100 miles/160 km) by car to Montalcino.

Bologna: Bologna Guglielmo Marconi (BLQ)
This airport services Tuscany but is low volume and likely not a great initial international flight choice. It is 2.5 hours (125 miles/200 km) by car from Montalcino.
Alternate Airports in Europe
These are other airports you can consider as alternative routes to reach Montalcino which may help create a different vacation itinerary if you are looking for one

Barcelona, Spain:Joseph Tarradellas Barcelona - El Prat Airport (BCN)
The church of "Sagrada Familia" is a site you will never forget and the food is amazing! From there, you would book a separate flight to either Rome or Florence (the closest airport) then rent a car and drive for approximately 1 hr and 30 min until you reach the final destination of Montalcino.

London, England:
London Heathrow (LHR)
Enjoy the, history, Royal Family and of course... the fish and chips!! From there, you would book a separate flight to either Rome or Florence (the closest airport) then rent a car and drive for approximately 1 hr and 30 min until you reach the final destination of Montalcino.

Paris, France:Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG)
Enjoy the most romantic city in Europe. Contrary to popular belief, the French are actually nice to Americans!!From there, you would book a separate flight to either Rome or Florence (the closest airport) then rent a car and drive for approximately 1 hr and 30 min until you reach the final destination of Montalcino.
Car Rental and Private Transportation
As you can imagine there are many rental and private transportation companies to choose from, these are just a few.
When renting a car in Italy, we strongly recommend International Driving Permit and purchasing insurance directly from the rental company.
- The international driving permit is very easy to obtain, just apply online and go to your nearest AAA office if you are a member, otherwise you can find the instructions online.
- Car insurance: American Credit Cards (Amex, Visa or Mastercard) do not cover insurance in Italy! Italian law mandates that rental companies include basic insurance—typically Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP)—with a high deductible (often €1,000–€2,000). These cards typically offer secondary rental car coverage, which only applies after a primary policy is in place. Since the rental company’s mandatory coverage doesn’t qualify as primary, your credit card’s insurance likely won’t cover you unless you buy additional insurance from the rental company to fill that gap. It’s confusing, but to avoid unexpected costs—like the full deductible in case of damage or theft—opting for the rental company’s insurance ensures you’re fully protected during your trip.

Sixt
We used them for our Europe trip and had a great experience. They are located at the Florence Train station and had a great fleet.

Sixt
Car rental supplier with good online reviews. Although we did not book through them for our Europe trip, they appear to be frequently used by travelers. The website compares rates to different companies...
The price of a private driver in Tuscany can greatly vary depending on the destination, but you should expect to pay upwards of 300 EUR but it is certainly worth it. These companies have been recommended by our wedding planner, they provide both private tours and private transportation.
