The Story of
Vitaleta Chapel
Located in a UNESCO World Heritage site, the chapel is one of the most photographed churches in Tuscany. Its light colors stand out against the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia.
"According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to a shepherdess and suggested that the people of San Quirico buy a statue of her from a Florentine workshop. The statue was made by Andrea della Robbia and placed in the church that was built on the spot.
The chapel was abandoned in 1861 due to seismic shocks and was restored in 1884 by Giuseppe Partini, a Sienese architect. The restoration was inspired by 16th century models and the façade was decorated with travertine stone and a rose window. The statue has since been moved to the Church of the Madonna di Vitaleta in San Quirico d'Orcia for easier viewing by tourists.
In 2021, entrepreneur Pasquale Forte bought the chapel and restored it to preserve the sacred place and attract more tourists. first Sunday of September, a festival is held in honor of the statue by the locals, anyone is welcome to attend"
